Highly commended

At the 2016 Mayor’s Design Awards we received a ‘Highly Commended’ award for refurbishment schemes for this property on the North Norfolk coast. We partnered up with award-winning architects, Thomas Faire, to build an extension and renovate the existing property.

Our clients testimonials speak for themselves, it’s the reason why we do what we do, creating beautiful homes for delighted customers.

Croft House - Wells-Next-The-Sea

Grocott and Murfit are just finishing a major house remodelling and extension project along with a full re-landscape of the garden area of our home. It was a big undertaking and involved extensive co-operation between many parties not least the local council . Grocott and Murfit’s team worked well and professionally with all the branches involved.  All the guys were friendly and very approachable and we felt we had found a builder whom we can trust.

We were not onsite for the majority of the build and even now as the project ends we have been very relaxed to have the team in and out of the house without our presence knowing they treat the building with care and respect.  They are a great team of tradesmen , being lovely to work with and always tidy and conscientious in their work. We would have no qualms in working with Grocott and Murfit in the future for any projects and happily recommend them to others.

Sara and Gerry

We have worked alongside Grocott and Murfit on several projects of various scales over the last few years. At all stages of the projects we have found the team to be a pleasure to work with, having a level of respect for the client, design, and consultant teams which fosters excellent working relationships. The way in which their company is structured and their dedication to training their own team leads to a conscientiousness in their work which gives me as a designer trust that they will make decisions that are for the betterment of the project and in the client’s best interest, and that they will consult with me on all major decisions where needed.

They are an engaged part of the team from the start, assisting in achieving cost reductions where necessary with a very transparent approach to the financial aspects of the project, whether on small or large projects.

We hope to continue to have a long working relationship with the team at Grocott and Murfit, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

Reeves Barn - Wighton

I am writing to recommend Grocott and Murfit for any project requiring meticulous attention to detail, respect for historic structures, and an exceptional understanding of architectural sensitivity. Our recent collaboration on a listed barn conversion project has been nothing short of exemplary, and I cannot speak highly enough of their professionalism, expertise, and dedication. Throughout the duration of the project, Grocott and Murfit exhibited remarkable attention to detail, ensuring that every restoration and renovation decision was made with the utmost care and consideration. Their ability to navigate the complexities of working with a listed building, while adhering to strict conservation guidelines, was impressive. They demonstrated a keen awareness of the sensitivity required when working with historic structures, always prioritizing preservation and authenticity above all else. Furthermore, Grocott and Murfit’s collaborative approach and clear communication skills were instrumental in ensuring the success of the project. They worked closely with myself and the client, as well as with heritage authorities and other stakeholders, to address any challenges that arose and find creative solutions that honoured the building’s unique history. In conclusion, I have the utmost confidence in recommending Grocott and Murfit for any project requiring the highest standards of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and respect for historic building fabric. Their exceptional skills, professionalism, and commitment to excellence make them an invaluable asset to any team, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with them again in the future.

RUA LLP have worked closely with Grocott & Murfit over the last 2 years converting and extending a listed barn to a private home. The property is in North Norfolk which previously formed part of the Holkholm estate. This being the first project RUA LLP has undertaken with Grocott & Murfit. RUA LLP acted as Contract Administrator and Quantity Surveyor.

The project utilised a Traditional Procurement method using a Minor Works Building Contract WCD. The project was negotiated. From the outset we found Grocott & Murfit very professional with a willingness to use their experience on listed buildings for the good of the project. Their early input in design had a positive effect which resulted in betterment in terms of programme and cost savings for the project. RUA LLP were pleased to see this continue through the build stage consistently making suggestions for consideration by the team. This project was off-grid and as a result required close coordination of MEP services. The project utilized a borehole, biomass, MVHR, PV’s as well as more specialised lighting and controls. The MEP services were Contractor Designed and required specialist knowledge which they had inhouse. Having inhouse expertise proved invaluable on this heavily serviced project.

The direct involvement at Director level gave reassurance to the client and the design team. The organisation and cleanliness of the site gave confidence. The quality of works carried out on site were exemplary in particular the brick and flint works, the repairs to the oak wall plates, trusses and purlins, the lime plaster works, the MEP services and the finishing trades including floor and wall tiling. The quality of the finished product was excellent.

RUA LLP would recommend Grocott & Murfit for any historic or listed project requiring an experienced and knowledgeable contractor with attention to detail and a quality end product.

Pepper Pot House - Hunstanton

We worked with G&M on our Pepper Pot House project. It was our first time working with G&M but I would not hesitate to work with them again in future. G&M’s pricing was transparent and they produced probably the best pricing document we have ever received in terms of detail showing how the final figure was achieved. From our and our clients’ perspective, this started the project on the right track. On site, work proceeded at good pace and with quality.  In our experience of other contractors, the site team is often constrained by their main office, where information has to pass through them before being enacted on site. Working with G&M however, we had a dedicated site agent with good communication (in our case, Stuart) meaning things progressed smoothly and was dynamic to outside factors (material availability etc.). Again, unlike many contractors we have worked with, G&M communicate well internally so that client/architect/contractor administrator doesn’t have to become their secretary to ensure the project keeps moving forwards. All projects have their challenges, but G&M resolved these in a manner one would expect and fixed matters within their scope without protracted discussions or argument. The building has now been nominated for a RIBA award which speaks of their build quality. The only reason we haven’t worked with G&M since is proximity – we are Cambridge based and most of our projects are around here. Should we have another project within G&M’s area again however, they will definitely be on our list

Sugar Beet Barn - Wighton

I would highly recommend Grocott and Murfitt very professional and exceptional builders.

Our barn conversion was a complex development but with their help we managed to produce an outstanding property that will be enjoyed by many.

Gospel Hall - Burnham Market

Grocott and Murfit have done several listed building projects and works to buildings within conservation areas for us in the North Norfolk area – the conversion of a former protected writers studio, barn conversions and conversion of a former Gospel Hall.

These were all very challenging projects working within the constraints of the conservation officers and all done to a very high standard of conservation workmanship, using appropriate materials, lime mortar etc. The Gospel Hall project included conserving the original fabric but also extending the building in a very sensitive contemporary manner.

I would be very happy to speak to any one directly to give them more information about G & M’s excellent work practices, the highly skilled foreman employed on site and management structure.

Thomas Faire MA (Cantab) Dip Arch RIBA

The team at Grocott & Murfit are fantastic to work with, being both knowledgeable and enthusiastic.  The dedication they give to their projects, and their eye for detail makes the collaboration process a real joy.

Three Acres

When looking for a builder for our project back in 2006, Grocott & Murfit, were referred to us as highly recommended. Initially they were contracted just to build the shell, as we had planned to deal with the rest of the build ourselves. However, they were so efficient we soon realised we wanted them to complete the whole project. We were expecting a stressful year of the build, but this was not our experience. Dealing with Dan and Jody was a pleasure and their employees were all polite and respectful.

To top the experience our property won overall winner at the Mayors design awards. I also highly recommend Grocott & Murfit and do so given any opportunity.

Swaffham Passivehouse

The quality of craftsmanship is of a very high order and we are not surprised that it has been nominated for an award. Jody and Daniel have put together a team whose great skill and attention to detail is excellent and whose constantly cheerful and positive approach always lifted our spirits. Dan’s contribution has been enormous and his calm approach and thoroughness have helped us through some difficult times.

Rob & Jane

Holme

We are delighted with the work that Grocott & Murfit did in building Rhubarb House for us. The key criteria was that the job was done bang on time and on budget, however there were so many other additional factors that impressed us. Particularly the fact that both Daniel and Jody regularly provided constructive creative input, for instance the work put into the feature staircase was a triumph. I was also really pleased to get the weekly site report and photographic update. As a frequent visitor to the site, sometimes unannounced, I was always struck by how well organised the site was and the constant buzz of activity. Several people in the village have subsequently complimented on how little mess and disturbance was experienced. We are really happy in our new home, if I was contemplating another project I would have no hesitation in working with Grocott & Murfit again.

Sue

Docking

Grocott & Murfit’s experience and meticulous attention to detail gave us confidence to stretch our imagination to design a home based around our lifestyle. “It’s better than I ever imagined it could be,” [and] “It’s worked out exactly the way I wanted it, and if I had to do it again I don’t think I’d change a thing. A huge thank you has to go out to Grocott & Murfit though – I may have had the ideas, but they certainly had the know-how.”

Old Hunstanton

We had the opportunity to purchase a idyllic plot of land overlooking the sea in Old Hunstanton. The land had planning permission for two houses, therefore we needed to find an investment partner to complete the purchase. Following research of local building contractors, we discovered Grocott and Murfit who were most welcoming of discussing a joint venture and more importantly had the passion, vision and inspiration to build our dream house. We had our own ideas on the build, however Daniel and Jody’s knowledge and guidance made it a perfect partnership.

George & Karen

Seaward

Nothing ever seems too much trouble for Jody & the team, they are prepared to do things again to achieve the end result. We are delighted with Seaward – Thank you.

Tim & Alice

North Norfolk

We instructed Grocott and Murfit as the main contractor on our new build project in 2019. Jody and Daniel are very client focused and clearly have a passion for building beautiful, innovative buildings. Their enthusiasm for our project was evident with Daniel at the tender stage and has continued with Jody throughout the build process. Their ethos permeates down through to their staff.

G&M consistently show willingness to work to the highest specification working with award winning, demanding architects. The workmanship, without exception, is phenomenal. It is clear that each of the craftsmen takes great pride in their finished work. Workers are always polite, respectful and well mannered. The vertical integration of the company including Arcadia Home & Living is very helpful in achieving a high quality end product, this was even more apparent in a difficult year due to a world wide pandemic. From design to build nothing was ever a problem to implement. Their experience was invaluable when embedding the latest modern technology throughout the build. Working with our various engineers they could offer up practical implementation solutions, improvements or alternatives.

Post completion their munificent care and prompt service made the bedding in process of a new innovative house a joy. Given everything we have seen, it does not surprise us that G&M won best residential build for Norfolk for our house. We would eagerly work with the G&M again and highly recommend them.

The Fleur Developments Ltd Construction management and team would just like to say a massive thank you everyone at Grocott & Murfit following the completion of our Greencroft development house conversion and total renovation in Blakeney. The tender process was presented in a professional and detailed manner. Once the project was secured, regular detailed progress meetings were arranged and carried out to keep us well informed during the construction journey.

Health & Safety considerations were set to a high standard and managed very well throughout the whole development. The project team and site manager set programmes and works standards and ensured they were maintained throughout the job. The tradesmen without exception were exemplary craftsmen and each one took a pride in their respective trades and worked as a team. Time was also given to help and assist the less experienced or trainees that were also employed. The delivery of the job was defect free, on time and on budget. Completed to an extremely high standard. WELL DONE AND THANK YOU!
Juliette Hopkins
Grocott & Murfit recently completed their fourth project for us and I write with thanks for delivering, with success yet again. The qualities that have consistently impressed throughout all the projects you have undertaken for us both at home and at our factory include:

A talented ability to provide imaginative and proactive design solutions Excellent communications throughout the project A diligent, courteous and skilled workforce with a can do attitude. Tidy and organised throughout the build process Delivering ahead of schedule, reliably and within budget Produced an excellent quality of workmanship and finish Provide a reliable and prompt aftercare service

The company’s commitment to excellence is obvious and will surely stand them in good stead for the future. We look forward to the opportunity of working with the team again.
Bill Cleyndert & Company Ltd
G&M did a major extension on our house in Thornham and it was a great pleasure to work with them. The work they did was wonderful, all the builders where very professional, friendly, did a very good job and gave very good advice along the way. We are very happy with the job they did, and would definitely recommend this builder.
We approached Grocott and Murfit to carry out a huge renovation project on Water Hall in December 2016, after they had build a beautiful new home in Little Snoring for my brother and sister-in-law.

We were impressed from the start and as our project evolved, we particularly appreciated the “inclusive” approach across their associated companies. We made extensive use of their joinery business for all our external doors, windows and internal fitted joinery and Arcadia for our kitchen and bathrooms. We spent time with their interior designer who helped immensely trying out colour schemes, finding light fittings and radiators, and even when asked to source things outside their normal remit like a unique carved front door we found that every detail was noted and what we received was exactly what we wanted. We had an excellent on site project manager and often met up with a company director on site to ensure we were fully satisfied.

This was a mammoth project, in addition to a substantial extension, all the existing ground floor was dug out to lay a new damp course and insulated concrete slab. All the external doors and windows were replaced and a new biomass boiler with underfloor heating installed to the entire property. Nothing was ever too much trouble and as the project continued the extras we requested were dealt with as if it was part of the original proposal.

We would highly recommend Grocott & Murfit and would welcome you to visit Water Hall to see for yourself the quality of work. Please do not hesitate to arrange this with Grocott & Murfit. We are so proud of our new home and delighted with the workmanship and attention to detail.
Julie Dyson
We have been very impressed with the whole end-to-end service we have received from Grocott & Murfit during the extension of our property. They worked with us to translate our vision to turn a dated bungalow into a contemporary house, from conception and drawings to completed build, advising us on getting the best quality finish for our budget. The project was completed within a tight timescale and at all times the team on site were considerate, tidy and friendly to deal with. Overall a conscientious company with a focus on quality and client satisfaction. We are one very satisfied customer!
Stu & Zoe Cox
Grocott & Murfit Builders built a single-storey extension for us in 2011. They produced the design for the planning application, using design software to illustrate what several alternative designs would look like, which was extremely useful in making the final choice. Taking into consideration the cost implications of alternative designs they made helpful suggestions to improve the design. They kept to the price quoted with no extras, and to the agreed building schedule. Their workers were friendly, considerate and courteous throughout. They responded promptly to queries and quickly remedied minor faults. We are entirely satisfied with the quality of the finished product.

I can’t thank you and your team enough for the work you have done on my house. You have made what some of my nearest and dearest thought was an ill-conceived and unnecessary venture an enjoyable and exciting experience. I appreciate your attention to detail and your willingness to take on board my special requirements.
Jane & Hiles
Thanks to you and all your team for the great job you have done for us. The extension has exceeded our expectations and integrated with the existing house beyond how we could have imagined. The children are very much enjoying the space and the stress levels from before the build are now reduced as people have the space they need! The visual effect of what you have designed and realised is amazing and all of our friends who have seen it are very impressed by what you have done and the quality of the workmanship. The bathroom may have caused more stress than all the rest put together, but that is past and what now in place is really amazing.

Your staff have been nothing but courteous, polite, friendly, ever-helpful, supportive and co-operative “going the extra mile”. Thank you for being sympathetic to our neighbours’ concerns too. So on behalf of Nicky and myself, thank you very much and we wish you all the best with your business.
Jon & Nicky
Apart from the high quality of the work and their attention to detail, we enjoyed working with G&M. They made a great deal of effort to understand what we were trying to achieve with the renovation of our property, adding much to the final design. Their appreciation of green and “eco” issues and the balance between retaining/adapting the existing framework or installing new materials was particularly helpful in ensuring our budget was used effectively. We would thoroughly recommend G&M if you are considering developing your property, especially if you are interested in achieving a “green” home.
Jane & Nick
I am absolutely delighted with the meals that I have been receiving. I have enjoyed every single one very much. I feel extremely grateful that a team of people I do not even know are reaching out to me and others like me in Fakenham during what can only be described as a very difficult time. My simple words of thank you do not seem to be enough, but they are sincerely meant. THANK YOU!
We can’t thank you enough for this enormous kindness. During these difficult times and with diminished health, to have such a treat is wonderful. Our grateful thanks go to all those that are preparing and delivering our meals in addition to your organisation and the funds that have been released for such a scheme.
Thank you to Grocott & Murfit and Void Architecture for renovating our beautiful home, especially in light of the Covid situation.
Johnnie & Anne
As Her Majesty The Queen’s representative I would like to thankyou for the wonderful contribution you have made to the county during these extraordinary and challenging times. Daniel, Jody and all your amazing staff – Norfolk owes you all a profound debt of gratitude for your quite outstanding service in your community. -Phillipa, The Lady Dannatt MBE

The generous donation of laptops from Grocott & Murfit’s Building Norfolk means that moving forward all children will have access to suitable websites and learning in all subjects, from maths to history and literacy to music. This is the ‘silver lining’ legacy of the pandemic which will help us build back better.
