A Contemporary, Ultra-Efficient Chalet Bungalow

A meticulously detailed replacement dwelling delivering modern architecture, exceptional energy performance, and a restrained, high-quality material palette.

Project Overview.

This project involved the demolition of an existing two-bedroom bungalow and the construction of a new, large four-bedroom modern chalet bungalow. Designed by Void Architecture, the home was conceived as a clean, contemporary dwelling that balances architectural simplicity with advanced building performance.

The design focuses on a restrained palette of premium materials, crisp modern detailing, and an uncompromising approach to energy efficiency, resulting in a home that is both elegant and future-proof.

Design & Architectural Approach

The architecture is deliberately understated, allowing proportion, detailing, and material quality to define the character of the building. A simple external palette was chosen to create a timeless aesthetic, while subtle detailing, such as the bespoke Burglar Bond brickwork flanking the front entrance, adds depth and craftsmanship.

Materials & Finishes

Only high-quality, durable materials were selected to ensure longevity and a refined appearance:

  • Roofing: Chatsworth Spanish natural slates

  • Brickwork: TERCA Marziale facing brickwork

  • Metalwork: VM Zinc “Plus” in Quartz pre-weathered finish

  • Kitchens & Bathrooms: Premium quality required and supplied throughout by Arcadia

The result is a cohesive and elegant exterior paired with refined, contemporary interiors.

Energy Performance & Sustainability

Achieving exceptional energy efficiency was a central driver of the project. The completed dwelling attained an outstanding EPC rating of 99 (A), reflecting the success of the design and construction approach. Key energy saving technologies for this property included the installation of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), solar PV system and a rainwater harvesting tank for garden irrigation. These systems significantly reduce operational energy use while supporting long-term sustainability.

Airtightness & MVHR Performance

One of the primary challenges was achieving an exceptionally low air permeability to support the Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system.

It achieved a positive performance which was made possible through careful detailing, precise construction, and the use of a DuPont Reflective AirGuard AVCL throughout. The specification was further exceeded with the application of Passive Purple internal airtight paint, enhancing airtightness beyond the original design intent.

Insulation Strategy

A robust, fabric-first insulation strategy was adopted throughout the house to minimise heat loss and reduce thermal bridging, forming the foundation of its exceptional energy performance. High levels of insulation are provided to the flat and pitched ceilings to ensure strong thermal continuity across the roof structure, while the ground floor construction is carefully insulated to limit heat loss to the ground. The external walls are built up using a layered insulation approach within the structure and internally, enhancing overall thermal efficiency and comfort. Together, these measures create a highly efficient, well-sealed home that delivers excellent thermal performance and long-term energy efficiency.

Windows & Glazing

High-performance VELFAC composite windows were specified throughout, combining aluminium externally with natural timber internally. These units provide excellent thermal performance while maintaining a refined, contemporary appearance.

Recognition

“We began the project collaboratively working with the client on this thoughtful, low energy, design led, replacement dwelling.

An exemplar low-energy home is not delivered by drawings alone, but through close collaboration with a builder.

Grocott and Murfit certainly excelled in their field – aligning ours and the client’s intent, expertise, and workmanship to turn energy performance, comfort, creativity and durability into built reality.

We hope the clients enjoy this beautiful home for many years to come.” Dan Higginbotham, Void Architecture
