Split-Level Coastal Residence in North Norfolk Designed by Award Winning Architect Thomas Faire
Elevated coastal living, crafted with precision, light, and timeless materials.
Project Overview
Designed by Thomas Faire and built by Grocott and Murfit, this luxury coastal home has been carefully conceived to work in harmony with its natural surroundings. Set across split levels, the design takes full advantage of the site’s natural fall, creating a beautifully integrated basement level while maintaining the scale of a refined two-storey dwelling above ground.
Design Concept
The home is thoughtfully arranged across multiple levels to maximise both space and setting. By embedding part of the structure into the landscape, the design enhances privacy, improves energy performance, and creates a seamless connection between the building and its coastal environment.
Lower Ground Floor
The basement level has been designed as a versatile and self-contained space, incorporating a utility and boot room, a TV and games room, and three well-appointed guest bedrooms. This level opens onto a lower terrace, providing direct access to the outdoors and extending the living space.
Ground Floor Living
The ground floor forms the heart of the home, balancing formal and informal living. It includes a drawing room, an expansive kitchen, and an open-plan living and dining area, all connected to both a main terrace and a secondary side terrace, ideal for entertaining and enjoying the coastal setting.
First Floor Retreat
The first floor is dedicated to the master suite, offering a private and luxurious retreat. It features a master bedroom, bathroom, and a steam/shower room, alongside a separate sitting area. A balcony extends from this level, framing uninterrupted views across the sea marshes.
Materials & Architecture
Constructed using a timber frame, the home combines traditional and contemporary elements through the use of flint wall features, expansive glazing, and carefully selected natural materials. The design maximises natural light throughout, creating bright, open interiors that feel connected to the landscape.
Sustainability & Performance
Sustainability is integral to the project, with the use of responsibly sourced timber cladding and materials chosen for their low embodied energy. The design approach not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances long-term efficiency and performance.
“This home is a great example of how thoughtful construction can elevate a design, working with the land rather than against it. By embracing the site’s natural levels and focusing on quality materials, we’ve created a space that feels both grounded in its setting and exceptional in its finish.” Daniel Grocott, Director
