Building Apprenticeship Excellence
At Grocott and Murfit, we believe that exceptional homes are the result of exceptional craftsmanship. Behind every detail, every joint, finish, and material choice, is the skill and care of experienced professionals who take pride in their work.
Apprenticeships play a vital role in sustaining this level of quality within the construction industry. They offer a structured and hands-on pathway into skilled trades, allowing individuals to develop their expertise through real project experience while working alongside seasoned craftsmen.
For us, apprenticeships are not simply about training they are about nurturing talent, preserving traditional skills, and shaping the future of high-end construction. By investing in apprentices, we are investing in the longevity of our craft and the continued excellence our clients expect.
Apprentice Spotlight: A Conversation with Leo, One of Our Carpenter Apprentices
To offer an insight into life as an apprentice at Grocott and Murfit, we spoke with one of our carpenter apprentices about their experience, what they’ve learned, and what drew them to the trade.
Q. What inspired you to pursue carpentry as a career?
A. I was very interested in all aspects of construction, but carpentry really stood out for me, as there are so many different things within it and it will make doing up a house in the future very achievable with the skills I learn through working in carpentry.
Q. How has working at Grocott and Murfit helped you develop your skills?
A. Grocott and Murfit has really helped, everyone I’ve worked with in the company has taught me very well and have been very helpful when I have questions as to why, and how we do certain things. They have also always been happy to take more time to show me how to do things, instead of just telling me which is a much better and more effective way to learn.
Q. How does Grocott and Murfit support you as an apprentice both on-site and off-site?
A. Grocott and Murfit support me really well in my apprenticeship as everyone takes time to teach me new skills, as well as better and more effective ways of doing things on-site. Off-site, the company support me as I have regular meetings with Becci, Operations Manager, where she checks in with me and takes an interest in how everything is going in college and on-site so it makes me feel very supported in my apprenticeship.
Q. What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting an apprenticeship?
A. My advice would be to definitely go for an apprenticeship, especially if you learn better in a hands-on environment, instead of in a classroom. I struggled to maintain interest in things in school and college before I started my carpentry apprenticeship, for me, learning on the job is a much better way of learning a skill and especially in construction as you’ll have the skills of the trade for life.
Q. What's the best part about being part of the Grocott and Murfit team? / What's been your favourite project to work on and why?
A. The best part of being part of the Grocott and Murfit team is the banter on site, everyone gets on really well and a lot of us have the same interests out of work. My favourite project to work on has been at our Holme site, North Norfolk, where I’m at currently. I think my skills have improved a lot while being here and I feel very confident in most aspects of carpentry now.
Summary: A Commitment to Craftsmanship
