Refined Heritage: The Gospel Hall Transformation in Burnham Market

A carefully considered conversion that honours historic character while delivering a refined, contemporary home of exceptional quality.

Project Overview

This exceptional project involved the sensitive transformation of a former Gospel Hall into a striking contemporary residence, carefully balancing modern living with heritage conservation. Working within the strict constraints set by conservation officers, the scheme demanded both technical expertise and a deep respect for the building’s historic character.

The result is a thoughtfully reimagined home that preserves the original fabric while introducing a refined, contemporary aesthetic. Every element has been executed to the highest standard, showcasing outstanding craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail throughout.

Design & Conservation Approach

The architectural vision, led by TF, centred on retaining the essence of the original structure while enhancing its usability for modern life with an extension.

Traditional materials were carefully selected to reflect the building’s heritage and its North Norfolk context. The use of natural Norfolk flint and chalk, alongside traditional brickwork and a red pantile roof, reinforces the building’s authenticity while ensuring durability and longevity.

Interior Layout & Living Spaces

The completed dwelling offers a harmonious blend of volume, light, and functionality:

  • A spacious sitting room with impressive high ceiling, enhancing the sense of openness
  • A very generous kitchen and dining area designed for both everyday living and entertaining
  • A well-appointed pantry and dedicated laundry room for practical convenience

Upstairs, the home continues to impress with:

  • A large master bedroom suite featuring a dressing room and en-suite
  • A private study, offering a quiet and flexible workspace

Craftsmanship & Delivery

The project stands as a testament to high-quality workmanship, with traditional building techniques and materials used throughout, including lime mortar. The collaboration between architect, contractor, and conservation authorities ensured a seamless delivery despite the complexities involved.

Testimonials

“Grocott and Murfit have completed several listed building projects and works to buildings within conservation areas for us in the North Norfolk area – the conversion of a former protected writers studio, barn conversions and conversion of a former Gospel Hall.

These were all very challenging projects working within the constraints of the conservation officers and all done to a very high standard of conservation workmanship, using appropriate materials, lime mortar, etc. The Gospel Hall project included conserving the original fabric but also extending the building in a very sensitive contemporary manner.

I would be very happy to speak to anyone directly to give them more information about G & M’s excellent work practices, the highly skilled foreman employed on site, and the management structure.” Thomas Faire Architects

“We delivered this project with a clear respect for its origins, blending traditional craftsmanship with refined modern construction to create a home of enduring elegance. The result reflects our dedication to exceptional quality.” Daniel Grocott, Director
